West LakeVisitor guide
1. Overview
West Lake lies in western Hangzhou, surrounded by hills on three sides, with a surface area of about 6.38 square kilometers. It is a national 5A scenic area and was added to the World Heritage List in 2011. The beauty of West Lake changes with the seasons—sunny, rainy, misty, and moonlit views each have their own charm. Famous sights include "Spring Dawn at Su Causeway" and "Lingering Snow on Broken Bridge," part of the classic "Ten Scenes of West Lake." The core area is free to enter. Strolling along the lake, you can experience the classic layout of "one lake, two causeways, and three islands."
2. Getting There
High-speed rail: Arrive at Hangzhou East Railway Station or Hangzhou Railway Station (Chengzhan), then take Metro Line 1 to Longxiangqiao Station. Exit C and walk 5–10 minutes to reach the Hubin lakefront of West Lake; the whole trip takes about 20 minutes. From Xiaoshan Airport, take the airport express to Wulin Square, then transfer to Metro Line 1 to West Lake, taking about 50 minutes.
Driving tips: On weekends and public holidays from September to November, an odd-even license plate restriction applies in the West Lake Scenic Area (odd plates on odd dates, even plates on even dates). For Lingyin and Nanshan Road areas, you must apply in advance for a "West Lake Pass," limited to once per vehicle per month. We recommend parking at park-and-ride lots such as Huanglong Sports Center or Hangzhou Chengxi Leisure Park (¥20/day) and taking a shuttle bus into the scenic area.
3. Highlights
Natural scenery: West Lake is beautiful year-round. In spring, Su Causeway blooms with peach blossoms and willows; on summer nights, lotus fragrance drifts from Quyuan Garden; in autumn and winter, withered lotuses, sycamore-lined paths, and red maples paint the landscape. Before 7 am, morning mist shrouds Broken Bridge, and at dusk, Leifeng Pagoda overlooks the golden lake—both are prime times for photos.
Cultural heritage: West Lake is not only a natural wonder but also a model cultural landscape. "Three Pools Mirroring the Moon," dating back to the Song Dynasty, carries the romantic legend of "33 moons." On Mid-Autumn night, moonlight, lantern light, and water reflections combine so that the three pagodas cast 32 moons on the lake; add the one in your heart, and you get exactly 33.
Local food: Zhiweiguan xiaolongbao, West Lake vinegar fish, and Longjing shrimp are must-try Hangzhou dishes. Locals often visit time-honored brands like Xinfeng Snacks (shrimp xiaolongbao + beef vermicelli soup, about ¥20), Kuiyuanguan (Pian Er Chuan noodles), and Hangzhou Restaurant (beggar's chicken and Sister Song's fish soup).
FAQ
- The core West Lake scenic area is free to enter, including the lakeside walking paths, Bai Causeway, Su Causeway, and Solitary Hill. It's open 24 hours a day, year-round. However, some attractions charge separate admission, such as Leifeng Pagoda (¥40), Yue Fei Temple (¥25), and the boat ride to Three Pools Mirroring the Moon island (¥55–70). We recommend booking tickets in advance via the "West Lake Travel" WeChat official account, as some paid attractions may limit visitor numbers during holidays.
- Driving is strongly discouraged! Strict traffic controls are enforced in the West Lake scenic area. On weekends and public holidays from September to November, an odd-even license plate rule applies daily from 8:00 to 17:00 (odd plates on odd dates, even plates on even dates), including new energy vehicles. To access the Lingyin Temple area or certain sections of Nanshan Road, you must apply for a "West Lake Pass" one day in advance (via the Jingcha Shushu app, Zheliban app, or Alipay), limited to once per vehicle per month. Even if you manage to drive in, parking is expensive (about ¥30–50/hour). Instead, park at a transfer lot like Huanglong Sports Center (¥20/day) and take a shuttle bus into the scenic area.
- The metro is your best option. Take Metro Line 1 to Longxiangqiao Station; it's about a 5–10 minute walk from the exit to the main lakeside area of West Lake. Fengqi Road, Huanglong Cave, and Ding'an Road stations are also close to different parts of the lake. After exiting the station, we recommend renting a shared bike to explore the lake. The first hour is free, and cycling along Su Causeway → Yanggong Causeway → Bai Causeway involves no steep hills, so you can stop anytime to enjoy the views while saving half the effort compared to walking. There are also loop buses within the scenic area (routes 4, 7, 1314, etc.) costing ¥2 per ride, covering all major sights including Broken Bridge, Leifeng Pagoda, and Viewing Fish at Flower Harbor.
- Attractions around West Lake are densely packed and easy to combine. Lingyin Temple is about 3 km away and reachable directly by bus No. 7. As Hangzhou's most famous temple, it requires a ¥45 Feilai Peak entrance ticket plus a ¥30 incense ticket. Xixi Wetland is about 5 km away; take Metro Line 3 to Xixi Wetland South Station—its free areas, Fudi Causeway and Hezhu Street, are enough for half a day. Longjing Village and Nine Creeks and Eighteen Gullies are perfect for nature lovers, offering stream hiking and tea-picking experiences. The classic "West Lake + Lingyin Temple" day tour is very popular: cruise the lake in the morning and pray for blessings in the afternoon.
- West Lake cruises fall into two main categories: official painted boats and hand-rowed boats. Official painted boats cost ¥55–70 per person (including the landing fee for Three Pools Mirroring the Moon) and depart from official piers such as Hubin, Zhongshan, and Huagang. With fixed routes and transparent pricing, they are the choice of most visitors. Hand-rowed boats offer more freedom and are charged by the boat at about ¥150 per hour (seats 4–6 people). They can take you to lesser-known spots like Wugui Pool and Maojiabu where the scenery is more unspoiled. Tip: Always buy tickets at official counters and avoid private boatmen on the street, who often overcharge and offer no safety guarantees.
