Zhouzhuang Ancient TownVisitor guide
I. Scenic Area Overview
Zhouzhuang is located in southwestern Kunshan, Suzhou, some 60 kilometers from Shanghai to the east and 40 kilometers from downtown Suzhou to the west. Situated in the heart of the Lake Tai basin, it covers 18.16 square kilometers of waterways, with crisscrossing rivers and connected lakes making it a true "land of fish and rice." This Jiangnan town is known as "China's No. 1 Water Town," is on UNESCO's Tentative List of World Heritage Sites, and was among the first batch of China's Historical and Cultural Towns and National AAAAA Tourist Attractions. It was also named one of CNN's "Top 10 Most Beautiful Towns in the World."
II. Getting There
Located in the heart of the Yangtze River Delta, Zhouzhuang has excellent transport links, whether you arrive by high-speed train, car, or bus.
High-speed train + bus: Take a high-speed train to Suzhou Station or Kunshan South Station, then transfer to a tourist express line to Zhouzhuang. From Suzhou North Square Bus Station, the coach takes about 1 hour and costs around ¥17.
Cross-regional buses: Routes like C10 now run from Wujiang to Zhouzhuang. After route optimization, the terminus was extended from Zhouzhuang Bus Station to the entrance of the ancient town scenic area, so you step off the bus right at the attraction. This route connects smoothly with Suzhou South Station and Tongli Station on Metro Line 4, significantly cutting travel time to Zhouzhuang.
Scenic area shuttle bus: Zhouzhuang operates a tourist shuttle bus from 8:00 to 20:00 every 15 minutes, with a flat fare of ¥3 per person. Stops include Zhouzhuang Tourist Parking Lot, Quanfu Road Intersection, Quangong Road (Pingqiao), Fugui Road Intersection, and Dongzhuang Parking Lot—you can hop off wherever is convenient. Group travelers can also charter a shuttle bus for ¥90 per vehicle (up to 29 passengers).
Driving: Set your GPS to "Zhouzhuang Ancient Town Scenic Area." Several parking lots surround the area, but plan ahead during holidays.
III. Highlights
Zhouzhuang boasts a long history and rich culture. Across its 38.96-square-kilometer area, the 0.47-square-kilometer ancient town core is still home to over 800 original residents living along the waterways, with more than 60% of the houses preserving Ming and Qing dynasty architecture. Master painter Wu Guanzhong praised it by saying "Zhouzhuang embodies the beauty of China's water towns," and architect I.M. Pei called it "a national treasure." Strolling through Zhouzhuang, you'll see street-spanning arcades, waterside pavilions, water-facing gates, long embankments, riverside porticos, bamboo-pierced stone railings, quiet water lanes, and grand courtyards—all radiating rustic elegance. It's truly a "living fossil" of Chinese water town architecture.
Intangible cultural heritage & immersive experiences — vibrant water town life
In September 2025, Zhouzhuang Ancient Town was featured as an outstanding case in the Blue Book on the Integrated Development of Intangible Cultural Heritage and Tourism 2025. Zhenfeng Twelve Workshops offers an intangible cultural heritage space where you can listen, touch, learn, and shop. The Ancient Stage hosts regular Kunqu Opera performances, keeping traditional theater alive in daily life. Only Zhouzhuang, an immersive multi-dimensional walk-through show, was included in the second batch of China's National Boutique Tourism Performances. Its silver-gray water-curtain facade complements the traditional white walls and dark tiles, using 3D wraparound screens and digital lighting to stage a timeless dialogue across eras. Drama at Zhang House uses digital projection to bring The Peony Pavilion to life under the night sky, while AR technology at Shen House lets historical figures step out of paintings. Visitors can also join festive activities like beating the spring ox, welcoming the God of Wealth, and fast sculling boat rides, or try traditional crafts such as bamboo weaving and rice wine brewing.
FAQ
- Must-visit attractions in Zhouzhuang include: Twin Bridges (Shide Bridge and Yong'an Bridge), the iconic landmark of Zhouzhuang, made world-famous by painter Chen Yifei. The two connected bridges resemble a key and offer the best photo spot. Shen House, built by the descendants of Shen Wansan during the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty, covers over 2,900 square meters with more than 100 rooms, giving you a glimpse into the lifestyle of the wealthiest family in Jiangnan. Zhang House, built in the Ming Dynasty, features the saying "sedan chairs pass the front gate, boats sail through the house," as a small river branch flows right through the building. Fu'an Bridge is the oldest bridge in Zhouzhuang and the only surviving three-dimensional bridge-tower complex in Jiangnan. In addition, the Zhouzhuang Museum and the Ancient Stage (where you can enjoy Kunqu Opera) are also worth a visit.
- Admission prices for Zhouzhuang Ancient Town are: ¥100 per person on weekends and public holidays, and ¥50 per person on weekdays. Starting April 7, 2025, the scenic area introduced the "One Ticket, a Lifetime of Zhouzhuang" benefit policy: visitors who purchase a full-price ticket can register in person with their physical ID card at designated on-site ticket windows to enjoy unlimited free entry for life. Free admission applies to: children under 6 years old or under 1.4 meters tall, seniors aged 70 and above, people with disabilities plus one companion, active and retired military personnel, families of martyrs, journalists, and tour guides. Half-price tickets (¥50) apply to: minors aged 6–18, full-time undergraduate students and below, and seniors aged 60–70.
- We recommend setting aside half a day to a full day. Day tour recommended route: Visit Shen House and Zhang House in the morning (about 2 hours), sample local specialties like Wansan Pork Knuckle at noon, take a sculling boat ride in the afternoon to experience the water town charm (about 30 minutes), stroll around Twin Bridges and Fu'an Bridge at dusk to watch the sunset, and enjoy the ancient town's night view in the evening. 2-day tour: Follow the same itinerary on the first day; on the second day, head to Quanfu Temple and Zhenfeng Street cultural street to buy souvenirs, or visit the Zhouzhuang Museum. To avoid crowds, we suggest entering before 7:30 AM when visitors are few and the light is soft—perfect for photos. Alternatively, enter after 4:00 PM to enjoy both the free evening admission (after 8:00 PM) and the night scenery.
- Yes, but keep a few things in mind. The ancient town's streets are mostly blue-stone slabs with steps and stone bridges, so pushing a stroller can be tricky—a foldable stroller or baby carrier is recommended. Kids usually love the sculling boats, and the stories about wealthy families told at Shen House and Zhang House will hold their interest. If you're traveling with seniors, visit on a weekday to avoid holiday crowds; mornings and evenings are quieter with softer light, perfect for a leisurely stroll. The scenic area's medical emergency number is 0512-57219990. Everyone should wear comfortable, non-slip flat shoes, especially when the old stone paths get wet.
- Zhouzhuang's highlights center on its classic water town scenery of "small bridges, flowing water, and homes." Twin Bridges (Shide Bridge and Yong'an Bridge) are the town's landmark, made world-famous by Chen Yifei's oil painting Memories of Hometown. Connected like an old-fashioned key, they look best in photos early in the morning. Shen House was the former residence of descendants of Shen Wansan, once the wealthiest man in Jiangnan. Covering over 2,900 square meters with more than 100 rooms, it tells the legendary story of this affluent family. Zhang House is famous for the saying "sedan chairs pass the front gate while boats sail through the house"—a small river branch runs right through the residence, letting boats enter the back courtyard directly. Fu'an Bridge is the only ancient bridge in town that still has its bridge towers. Milou (a historic gathering place for scholars) and Nanhu Lake Autumn Moon Garden are also worth a visit.
