Bottom line: Lingering Garden is at 338 Liuyuan Road, just outside Changmen Gate in the northwest part of Suzhou's old city—not in the northeast where Humble Administrator's Garden and Pingjiang Road are. The most reliable way to get there yourself is to take Metro Line 2 to Shilu Station, leave via Exit 1, cross Guangji Bridge, and walk west along Liuyuan Road for about 10 minutes. If you're arriving by high-speed train, Suzhou Railway Station is closest; Suzhou North Railway Station has more trains but is farther away. Fortunately, both stations are on Line 2, so no transfers are needed. If you're traveling with seniors or kids, carrying lots of luggage, or making a day trip from Shanghai, door-to-door pickup or a private car is much easier.
First, know where it is: Lingering Garden sits outside Changmen Gate in the northwest old city
Many travelers plan an itinerary like "Humble Administrator's Garden in the morning, Lingering Garden in the afternoon," only to waste time on the road. Humble Administrator's Garden, Lion Grove Garden, and the Suzhou Museum are clustered in the northeast of the old city, all within walking distance of each other. Lingering Garden, however, is outside Changmen Gate, grouped with Xiyuan Temple, Shantang Street, and Tiger Hill in the northwest. So it makes more sense to pair Lingering Garden with Xiyuan Temple and Shantang Street in the same half-day rather than tacking it onto Humble Administrator's Garden.
The entrance to Lingering Garden is quite small—a deliberately understated approach—so first-time visitors often walk right past it. Just set your navigation destination to the main gate of "Lingering Garden." For tickets, opening hours, and how to buy them, see the Lingering Garden page; for how to navigate from the narrow corridor to the central landscape, eastern halls, and Cloud-Capped Peak once inside, see our Lingering Garden half-day tour route. This article focuses only on getting there and leaving.
Metro: Line 2 Shilu Station, the top choice for independent travel
The closest metro station to Lingering Garden is Shilu Station on Line 2. Take Exit 1, cross Guangji Bridge onto Liuyuan Road, then walk west for about 10 to 15 minutes to reach the entrance. The route follows city streets, so just follow your map app.
Line 2 connects both Suzhou Railway Station and Suzhou North Railway Station: board at Suzhou Railway Station and ride two stops south to Shilu, with Shantang Street Station in between. You can also take the same line directly from Suzhou North High-Speed Railway Station to Shilu, though it's more stops and a longer ride. Coming from the east side of the old town, take Line 1 to Guangji South Road Station, transfer to Line 2, and ride one stop to Shilu.
The downside of the metro is the walk at the end. In scorching summer heat or rain, that 10-plus-minute walk can be tough with seniors or kids, so consider hailing a taxi after exiting the station.
Bus
Several bus routes have a "Lingering Garden" stop, including a few tourist lines prefixed with "You," dropping you right near the attraction. Bus routes in Suzhou change frequently, so checking real-time routes on a map app on the day of travel is more reliable. Buses aren't convenient with luggage, so they're better suited for when you're already staying downtown and traveling light.
Arriving by high-speed train: Suzhou Station vs. Suzhou North Station
Suzhou Railway Station is the old train station north of the ancient city and the closest to Lingering Garden. After exiting, you can transfer directly to Metro Line 2 or Line 4; Line 2 takes just two stops to Shilu Station. Suzhou North Railway Station is in Xiangcheng District with more high-speed trains, but it's much farther from Lingering Garden. Line 2 runs there directly, but allow extra time if taking a taxi or arranging a pickup. If both stations have suitable trains when booking, choose Suzhou Railway Station for Lingering Garden.
After arriving at Suzhou Railway Station, follow the "Metro" signs. Once outside, head down to Suzhou Railway Station metro stop. Some exit passages have security-free transfer entrances directly into the metro concourse—follow the on-site signs. At Suzhou North Railway Station, the Line 2 entrance is through the station's commercial corridor; just follow the floor arrows. At either station, you don't need to leave the building to hail a taxi, so it's smooth if you're traveling light. If you've arranged a pickup, specify which exit and which plaza square to save time looking for your driver.
Many of our group tours also use Suzhou Railway Station as the pickup and drop-off point: A Dream of Suzhou 2 Days 1 Night picks up at Suzhou Railway Station on day one, then visits Canglang Pavilion and Lingering Garden before returning to the station on day two; Joyful Jiangnan 3 Days 2 Nights and Jiasu Water Town 4 Days 3 Nights also end at Suzhou Railway Station. When booking your round-trip tickets, match them to these meeting points.
Shanghai to Lingering Garden: High-speed train or private car
By high-speed train: Trains to Suzhou depart from both Shanghai Hongqiao Station and Shanghai Railway Station, with the fastest taking just over 20 minutes. On arrival, take the metro to Shilu Station or a taxi to Liuyuan Road. Best for one or two travelers with little luggage who don't mind transferring. Check 12306 for current schedules and travel times.
Door-to-door by private car: Get picked up at your Shanghai hotel and dropped off near Lingering Garden. Based on our experience running cars between Shanghai and Suzhou, off-peak drives usually take just over an hour to two hours, longer during morning and evening rush hours or holidays when leaving the city. The upside is no hauling luggage through transfers, plus you can stop by Shantang Street or Tiger Hill in the afternoon and be back at your Shanghai hotel that evening. For vehicle options and pricing, see Shanghai to Suzhou private car.
If you land at Hongqiao Airport or Pudong Airport and want to head straight to Suzhou, just share your flight number with our travel consultant. We can arrange a private car from Shanghai to Suzhou: we'll pick you up at the airport and drop you directly at your Suzhou hotel or near Lingering Garden, saving you the transfer from the airport to the train station.
Coming from Nanjing, Wuxi, or Hangzhou
From Nanjing, Changzhou, or Wuxi, high-speed trains along the Shanghai-Nanjing corridor run frequently to both Suzhou Station and Suzhou North Station. Suzhou Station is still the better choice; once there, follow the instructions above and take Line 2 to Shilu. There are also direct high-speed trains from Hangzhou to Suzhou—check your ticket for the exact arrival station. If you're traveling with two or more people, have lots of luggage, or want to visit several spots along the way in one day, consider a door-to-door private car. See Nanjing to Suzhou private car, Wuxi to Suzhou private car, and Hangzhou to Suzhou private car for clear details on vehicle types, passenger capacity, and guide add-ons.
Getting there from Humble Administrator's Garden and Pingjiang Road
If you're already in the eastern part of the old city (around Humble Administrator's Garden, Pingjiang Road, or Guanqian Street), getting to Lingering Garden means crossing the entire old town. A taxi or private car is the most direct option. Factor in about half an hour for the trip between gardens plus queuing to enter. The subway requires a transfer and suits those who aren't in a hurry. Since the two areas aren't close, we usually recommend splitting Humble Administrator's Garden and Lingering Garden across two half-days—one in the morning and one in the afternoon, with lunch in between. It's much more relaxing than rushing through two major gardens back to back. If you only have one day, visit Humble Administrator's Garden in the morning, have lunch in the old city, head to Lingering Garden in the afternoon, and stroll nearby Shantang Street in the evening. That way, you cover the east and west sides in separate half-days without backtracking.
The Lingering Garden attraction page lists opening hours as 07:30–16:30 daily. If you arrive in the afternoon, allow at least two full hours inside—don't cut it too close to closing time. Always check the attraction page and on-site notices for the latest information.
Driving & Parking: Limited Spaces, Arrive Early on Holidays
If you're driving, just set your GPS to Lingering Garden. According to the attraction's information, the Lingering Garden parking lot has about 100 spaces and fills up easily on weekends, holidays, and during flower- and maple-viewing seasons. Traffic around Liuyuan Road is also heavy. If you drive or rent a car, it's best to arrive shortly after opening. Alternatively, have your driver drop you off near the entrance and then head to the parking lot to wait, saving you time hunting for a spot.
Getting Around in Rain and Summer Heat
On rainy days, the metro is still your most reliable option, but you'll need an umbrella for the 10-minute walk from Shilu Station to Lingering Garden, and your shoes may get wet—consider taking a short taxi ride after exiting the station instead. In midsummer, temperatures peak around noon, so try to visit Lingering Garden in the morning, spend the afternoon at the shaded shops along Shantang Street or resting at your hotel, and head out again in the evening. On days with typhoon or heavy rain warnings, high-speed trains may be rescheduled, so check your train status before setting out and confirm pickup times with your driver if you've booked a private car or station transfer.
Planning Your Day: Sample Itinerary from Shanghai
Here's a sample schedule for independent travel by high-speed train from Shanghai. Feel free to adjust the timing based on the train tickets you book:
Morning: Take a high-speed train from Shanghai Hongqiao Station or Shanghai Railway Station to Suzhou Railway Station. Exit and transfer to Metro Line 2, ride two stops to Shilu Station, and walk to Lingering Garden. The first hour or two after opening tends to be less crowded, making it a great time to explore the central landscape area and Cloud-Capped Peak.
Noon: After spending two to three hours at Lingering Garden, head out for lunch around Liuyuan Road or near Xiyuan Temple. Xiyuan Temple is very close to Lingering Garden, so you can easily stop by after your meal.
Afternoon to evening: Head east back to the Shilu and Changmen area to stroll along Shantang Street. Leave after the lanterns light up in the evening. For the return trip, take Metro Line 2 from Shantang Street Station or Shilu Station back to Suzhou Railway Station, then catch a high-speed train to Shanghai. The whole route only requires the metro plus walking, and the longest stretch is the ten-minute walk from Shilu Station to Lingering Garden.
If you're traveling with family and elderly relatives, you can swap this same route for a private car: depart from your Shanghai hotel in the morning and be dropped off right near Lingering Garden; the car takes you to lunch at noon; after exploring Shantang Street or Tiger Hill in the afternoon, your driver picks you up at an agreed spot and drives you back to Shanghai in the evening. Travel time is slightly longer than the high-speed train, but you won't need to transfer or haul luggage all day. If you have more time, consider staying overnight in Suzhou: stroll Shantang Street on the first evening, visit Lingering Garden the next morning, then head to the Humble Administrator's Garden area in the afternoon or start your journey home.
Tips for traveling with seniors, kids, and luggage
Lingering Garden is a classical garden with steps, raised thresholds, and winding corridors, plus plenty of uneven ground. If you're pushing a stroller or accompanying someone with limited mobility, allow extra time, and rest in the waterside halls or under the covered walkways when you get tired.
When heading to Lingering Garden from the train station with large luggage, taking the metro means riding elevators inside the station and walking a fair distance after exiting. It's easier to drop your bags at the hotel first or book a point-to-point private car. When booking, specify your train number, group size, number of bags, and whether you need a child seat all at once, and the driver will wait at the exit based on your train schedule.
During holidays, the spring flower-viewing season, and the autumn maple-leaf season, Lingering Garden and Shantang Street get very crowded. You may have to wait in line for a taxi at subway stations and scenic area entrances, so leave extra time for your return trip and don't schedule the last leg too tightly.
Tips for foreign, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan travelers
High-speed train travel in mainland China requires real-name ticketing: foreign travelers use their passports to purchase tickets and enter stations, while Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan travelers use the corresponding permits for travel to the mainland. Tickets can be purchased on Railway 12306. Both train and subway stations have Chinese and English signage, and subway stations offer self-service ticket machines; accepted payment methods are as posted at each station. If you're unfamiliar with Chinese signs, carrying luggage, or short on time, booking a station pickup in advance will save you a lot of hassle.
How to choose: independent travel, transfers or private car
If you're traveling light with just one or two people, taking Metro Line 2 to Shilu Station is the best deal. If you arrive in Suzhou by high-speed train and just want to head straight to your hotel or the Lingering Garden, you can book a station transfer. If you also plan to visit Xiyuan Temple, Shantang Street, and Tiger Hill on the same day, or make a round trip from Shanghai, booking a private car for the day makes more sense. To truly understand highlights like the Cloud-Capped Peak and Wufeng Immortal Hall inside the garden, add a private guide. For trips longer than a day that require arranging transportation, guided tours, and accommodation together, leave it to our custom travel service.
Where to go after the Lingering Garden
After leaving the Lingering Garden, the most convenient stop nearby is Xiyuan Temple, which is within walking distance and easy to combine with your visit—see how to combine the Lingering Garden and Xiyuan Temple. Heading east back to the Shilu and Changmen area brings you to the eastern section of Shantang Street. Stroll the old street and admire the lanterns at dusk—see how to combine the Lingering Garden and Shantang Street in one day. If you're looking for a place to eat nearby, check out food near the Lingering Garden. Further northwest is Tiger Hill. If you have the energy, you can head there in the afternoon, but since it involves some climbing, don't schedule it too late in the day.
