Step into Puyuan Fashion Ancient Town, where the water town streets hide a complete food scene rarely found elsewhere: riverside meals, Song-dynasty-style banquets, Hong Kong-style quick bites, Zen-inspired tea snacks, and a whole street of local snacks.
This guide is organized as full meals → budget bites → Song Banquet / Xiaoshi Market → hotel dining → tea and snacks, so you can pick restaurants based on your group and schedule. If you arrive in Jiaxing by high-speed train or plane, book a station transfer first. To sample multiple spots inside and outside the ancient town, a private car is ideal for linking your stops into one route.
To keep things simple and align your guided tour with meal times, join a food-themed group tour, or arrange a custom private trip with a private guide. Once you share your group size, number of days and dietary restrictions, our travel consultant will plan everything around your arrival and departure. Contact customer service below to get started.
You can also check our site's Jiashui Hongyun itinerary or Jiahu Xunmeng itinerary for schedules that include Puyuan, then decide whether to join a group tour or explore the restaurants on your own.
What are the restaurants like in Puyuan Ancient Town?
For business dinners, start with Canshige: an upscale specialty restaurant in the ancient town. I chose it when hosting clients with my family elders, and both the setting and the dishes stood out.
The restaurant sits right along the canal—open the door and you step onto a waterside corridor. It preserves large sections of Song-style wooden beams, paired with leather chairs and metal wine cabinets, blending the ancient town's bones with modern texture just right. It specializes in Southeast Asian (Nanyang) wok dishes, plus modern fruit cocktails and specialty pour-over coffee, so you can keep chatting after dinner without changing venues.
For business dinners, book a private room toward the back; for a date, pick a window seat by the water—the river reflections at dusk are gorgeous; friends catching up can sit at the open corridor tables and enjoy the evening breeze. The Southeast Asian dishes have been adapted to local tastes, so even kids and older guests who avoid spice will find something they like. Prices lean high, so a solo quick meal isn't great value. It's better suited for groups or special occasions.
Budget-friendly restaurants in Puyuan Ancient Town
After touring the galleries and gardens, if you're craving a light meal or Hong Kong-style desserts, Leli Ice House is my go-to stop every time: a retro two-story wooden building along the street, easy to spot from afar once its warm yellow lanterns light up at night.
The owners promise "fast, photogenic, authentic": quick service, Instagram-worthy plating, and consistent Hong Kong flavors. I usually order the rose soy sauce chicken and dry-fried beef ho fun. In summer, add iced milk tea and double-skin milk pudding, and you can watch the willows over the river from your window seat.
Prices are mid-range and affordable for the ancient town—¥20–30 per person is usually enough for a full meal, making it great for students, solo travelers, and families with kids. Compared to the marked-up stalls at the scenic area entrance, the flavors are consistent and prices are clearly listed, so you're far less likely to be disappointed.
Stop in for a rest when you get tired from exploring—no need to set aside time for a full meal. If your schedule is tight or you have lots of luggage, it's easier to hire a private car to drop you off nearby before heading inside.
Jiaxing food highlight: Gujing Restaurant & Bar
Most old-town bars rely on waterfront scenery, but Gujing Restaurant & Bar is built around a century-old well—the only one of its kind on the entire street. It's easy to miss while wandering the lanes, so make a point to stop by.
A well-preserved old well sits in the center of the courtyard, surrounded by stone slabs with tables and chairs, plus a transparent triangular glass lounge area. On sunny days, greenery provides shade. From the open seating you can watch costumed performers interact with visitors; private rooms can be reserved for family meals or casual meetings. The menu features local Tongxiang home-style dishes, often served as red-oil braised meats in clay pots.
In the evening, lights reflect off the well curb and water, making it much quieter than the snack stalls on Siwan Street—perfect for a relaxed meal and conversation. It's also easier to take photos without crowds in the background.
Puyuan Ancient Town food and ambiance review
Changjie Song Banquet
To fully experience a Song Dynasty dining atmosphere, Changjie Song Banquet is the only Song-banquet-themed restaurant in the ancient town. It adapts Jiangnan and Zhejiang local cuisine into dishes with Song-era aesthetics. I even wore new Chinese-style clothes to check it out.
Decor and experience
The decor, furnishings and amenities are all Song Dynasty style: while you eat, you can watch performances of incense burning, tea whisking, scroll hanging and flower arranging. Enjoy hot Jiangnan dishes while soaking up the elegance of the literati. The red wall entrance marked "Song · Banquet" is a popular hanfu photo spot.
Dishes at Changjie Song Banquet
The flavors are the familiar light, fresh and slightly sweet Jiangsu-Zhejiang cuisine, with a good balance of meat and vegetables. The portions for a full table are generous, making it ideal for families or small hanfu groups. During the day, you might catch hanfu guzheng performances at the Fangjian Show Stage outside the restaurant, and it's also a great spot for ancient-style portraits during your meal.
The immersive experience follows a set pace, so it's not suitable for those rushing through an itinerary. It's best for travelers with plenty of time who want to deeply experience Song dynasty culture. To fit the Song Banquet sessions and guided commentary into your schedule, consider a group tour or private custom travel.
What's there to eat on a Puyuan Ancient Town night tour?
Many people only know about the night market, but few have heard of the Song Street Morning Market: a themed morning food experience designed for multi-day guests. It recreates the early markets described in "Dongjing Meng Hua Lu." Staying at a hotel or guesthouse inside the scenic area makes it much easier to catch it.
The morning market opens at dawn, with streets lined with Song-style snack stalls selling steamed buns, noodles and traditional pastries. Visitors and costumed performers mostly wear Song dynasty clothing, making you feel like you've stepped into an ancient morning market.
The flavors build on Song Dynasty cuisine but are adapted into modern, soft pastries and light noodle soups. It's not greasy in the morning and pairs perfectly with freshly brewed plain tea. Hotel guests who take a stroll early in the morning before the day tour groups arrive get a unique, off-the-beaten-path experience.
If you're heading over early from downtown Jiaxing, check the pick-up and drop-off schedule and market opening hours first to avoid a wasted trip.
What's the late-night food like in Puyuan Ancient Town?
If you're out exploring until 8 or 9 p.m. and want a nice atmosphere with reliably good late-night food, head to Midnight Diner. It specializes in evening service and closes later than regular restaurants—perfect for a bite after watching "Puyuan Meng Hua Lu" at Meijing Theater.
Right along the canal, it blends wooden architecture with modern decor. The menu balances light water-town vegetables with satisfying meat dishes, and single portions are generous, so you don't have to order a whole table's worth.
At night, the breeze by the river is cool. Order a few small dishes and a pot of rice wine by a riverside window—perfect for couples or a few friends to wind down. It's never noisy, so solo night strolls work well too.
If your evening route is long and you don't want to backtrack, have your driver wait at the theater or riverside in a private car to pick you up.
Puyuan Ancient Town hotels and dining guide
Meishang Resort Hotel
Guests staying at Meishang Resort Hotel don't need to hunt around town for meals or afternoon tea. The hotel has Meishang Chinese Restaurant, a buffet, and coffee with afternoon tea. During my stay, I ate all three meals at the hotel—the quality was consistently good.
You can also watch our Puyuan hotel recommendation video first to compare rooms and dining options before booking.
Meishang Chinese Restaurant
The Chinese restaurant is designed around Zen and Jiangnan garden elements, with wood-toned soft furnishings paired with light colors, making it ideal for guest breakfasts and formal meals. The Huaiyang cuisine is light in flavor, perfect for guests traveling with seniors or young children.
Meishang buffet and afternoon tea
The buffet blends diverse cuisines, offering both Western dishes and Tongxiang water town snacks, with themes that change by season. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlook white walls and dark roof tiles. The coffee afternoon tea also rotates its theme with the four seasons, featuring beautifully plated presentations. If you're tired after an afternoon of exploring, resting back at the hotel is far quieter than squeezing into a street-side tea shop.
For families or multi-day trips, mix hotel dining with meals outside the ancient town, then use custom private travel to arrange your accommodation, meals, and sightseeing into one seamless itinerary for a hassle-free experience.
Puyuan Ancient Town specialty tea guide
If you'd rather skip a full meal and just have some tea and rest, the ancient town features a year-round Jiangnan tea area with different experiences each season. There's even budget tea for just ¥1, drawing both locals and visitors who come specifically for it.
In winter, the highlight is fireside tea brewing: roast persimmons, red dates, and rice cakes over a charcoal stove on the waterside wooden deck, paired with hot tangerine peel tea. In summer, there are waterside tea sessions, cooling herbal teas, and seasonal specialty drinks—sit by the water to escape the midday heat.
Year-round, there's also budget-friendly ¥1 tea and tangerine peel tea, so you can check it out even on a tight budget. The setting is perfect for hanfu photos. A half-hour break here is just right while exploring the old lanes.

Jiaxing local snacks: Puyuan food guide
For authentic, affordable Tongxiang snacks, head straight to Louxia Street: these are everyday snack stalls for locals with none of the inflated tourist prices. A few yuan will satisfy your cravings, and it's perfect for eating as you stroll.
Puyuan signature snacks
The signature items are fairly fixed: Juxiang Stinky Tofu is crispy outside and tender inside, with a secret local sauce. There are also Mazi Shaobing (sesame cakes), whole Huangqiao Shaobing, Huanxi Shumai and other pastries—many locals make a special trip just to buy them.
Puyuan snack prices
Prices are clearly marked and portions are generous. Just drop by after visiting the exhibition halls and gardens—no need to set aside a big block of time for meals. If you're traveling with kids, buy a few items to share. It's a safer bet than the trendy stalls on the main street.
For trips between the high-speed rail station or your hotel and Louxia Street, Song Banquet, and the night tour spots, booking a private car is more reliable than hailing a taxi on the spot, especially when traveling with seniors or children.
Small group tour experience in Jiaxing
After trying a small group tour, it becomes clear: the fun isn't about checking off every trending shop in one go. It's about picking places that suit your group and pace, then eating slowly—biting into a shaobing on Louxia Street to soak up the local vibe, enjoying the Four Arts and Song-dynasty dishes at the Changjie Song Banquet, and catching your breath by a tea table.
Not sure how to plan your meals? Just send your arrival and departure train numbers, group size, and preferences for main meals, morning market snacks, and late-night bites to our travel consultant: station transfers handle your luggage and arrivals, a private car takes you restaurant-hopping in and around the ancient town, while a group tour / custom private trip / private guide handles commentary and pacing.
